For example, spares can only be requested for by members of the maintenance crew. Even then such requests must be tied to a maintenance request and be related to the equipment being serviced. Raw materials requests can only emanate from active work orders. Raw materials requests are automatically generated when work orders are activated. Manual requests are limited and restricted to certain managerial roles which still requires higher levels of approvals.

The goal of any inventory system is to avoid stock outs and overstocking. That is keeping inventory at optimal levels at all times. This is achieved through careful planning, setting and monitoring of stocking parameters such as re-order levels, purchase lead times, safety stocks, on hand, on order, available to promise, economic order quantities etc. Setting these values constitutes key elements of your stocking policy. For example when stocks are drawn down to reorder levels, the application automatically generates a purchase requisition for the item for the economic order quantity. If the stock item is a manufactured item and your restocking policy is set to Demand Driven, a work order request is created instead and sent to the necessary approving authorities.
